The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 3.1

eBook Reader is a program that allows you to download and read e-books published by Witherby Seamanship (distributed as files with the EBK extension). These files are generated using eBook Pro, a program that allows e-book distributors to have more control over book's features and functionality, such as the possibility of disabling printing, allowing payments via the Internet, or even disabling e-books remotely.

eBook Reader will allow you to view the catalog of titles available from Witherby Seamanship’s site (typically marine-related works), buy, and download them to your computer. There are a lot of titles that you can download for free. Once you have downloaded your books, you will need to import them into your bookshelf. Then, you can choose any of the titles in the bookshelf and start reading it.

According to the rights granted by the publisher, you may be able to copy portions of the text and paste them into a new document, and to print the whole book. The reader will allow you to adjust the size of the e-book in the screen, rotate pages, make bookmarks, and search for terms within the text.

This reader works only on Windows computers.
  • It is free.
  • You can use this program to read other EBK e-books not published by Witherby Seamanship.

What's new in version 3.1

The main changes that users of older versions of eBook Reader will notice in v3 are:

1. Carousel Display - in eBook Reader v3 a rotating carousel display can be used to navigate your eBook library instead of the content tree

2. Bookmarks - in previous versions your personal bookmarks were displayed in a small treeview control beneath the main content tree. In version 3 the bookmarks are incorporated into the main carousel navigation and can also be viewed in a full screen grid mode.

3. Book Title Search - from the carousel view you can quickly search for a book based on a word or a few letters in the title rather than having to navigate to the particular section that the book belongs to

4. Search - the previous version displayed search results in a split screen with search result details on the left hand side and a preview window showing the document on the right hand side. In version 3 the document preview appears as a separate pop-up window that can be resized and moved to the most convenient location for you.

5. Custom Zoom - you can now specify your own custom zoom level (between 10% and 1600%) when viewing an eBook

6. External Applications - some eBooks may now have other programs which can be installed along with the eBook. You will be able to launch these external applications from within eBook Reader.
